Soybean (Glycine max), otherwise known as a 'miracle crop' with over 40% protein and 20% oil, originated in China. Soybean cultivation in India was negligible until 1970, but it grew rapidly thereafter, crossing over 6 million t in 2003. This has made India the 5th largest producer of soybean in the world today. Soybean is currently a major crop grown during the Kharif or monsoon season (July-October) in the dryland areas of central and peninsular India. Madhya Pradesh is known as the “Soybean State” of India, comprising 55% of the total national area of soybean cultivation.

Development of the world famous “Jawahar Soybean” series of soybean varieties with better oil (18-20%) and protein (40-42%) contents and resistant to major diseases, which laid to strong foundation for expansion of its area and production in the country. Four varieties of soybean released from JNAU, Jabalpur are covering 92.2% area of India. The most popular variety JS 335 has wide adaptability and high yield is popular in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh covering 50% area. The next most popular variety is JS 93-05 at four seed pod culture, early, resistant to root rot, tolerant to insect pests and drought conditions. It is popular in 35% area of India covering Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Karnataka States of the country.

The first extra early variety JS 95-60 released by JNAU has made impact in the low rainfall and upland conditions. It is quite suitable for cropping sequence and increase in cropping intensity. This is resistant to root rot, insect pests and drought. A recent release is JS 97-52, which is high yielding, good germinability, wide adaptable, suitable for Central Zone and North Eastern Zone and getting popular across the country. It is first multiple resistant variety showing resistance to major diseases and insects pests. It has been found tolerant to excessive moisture, drought condition as well as multiple adverse environments.

JS 20-29: An early maturing (95 days), high yielding (25-30 q/ha), multiple resistant (yellow mosaic virus, charcoal rot, blight, bacterial pustule, leaf spots, stem fly, stem borers and defoliators) variety suitable for double cropping rainfed situation and inter cropping. It possesses excellent germinability and longevity. JS 20-34: An extra early maturing (87 days), high yielding (22-25 q/ha), multiple resistant (charcoal rot, blights, bacterial pustule, leaf spots, stem fly, stem borers and defoliators) variety suitable for low and medium rainfall, light to medium soils, upland conditions, intercropping and to enhance cropping intensity. It possesses excellent germniability and longevity.

JS 95 60: This variety is extra early (82-89 days) with four seeded pods Excellent germination field emergence, high crop growth rates Resistance to lodging and shattering Resistance to root rot and important soybean diseases and insect- pests. Suitable for, increasing cropping intensity, intercropping, low rain fall and upland situations JS 97-52: It is wide adaptable culture of medium duration. This variety provides high yields in varied ecoadaphic situations It is rated as a multiple resistant variety. Excellent regarding germinability, field emergence and longevity.
