Plant Physiology Prior to the bifurcation till 1970 department was nominated as
“Department of Agricultural Botany” and the faculty was engaged in teaching, research
and extension activities of Plant Physiology, Ecology and Plant Breeding & Genetics.
However, after bifurcation during 1971 the post graduate degree was awarded in Agricultural
Botany (Crop Physiology). During the year 2000-01 the department was re-named as
the “Department of Plant Physiology”. During 2005-06 Mega projects from various
funding agencies were sanctioned for the agro-techniques development processing
and value addition in Medicinal & Aromatic Plants including HRD by organizing training
programs, keeping in view of more focused activities on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants
once again the department was renamed as the “Department of Crop and Herbal Physiology”
later, due to the decision for common course curriculum in all State Agricultural
Universities (SAUs) in the fourth Deans Committee name of the Department has been
changed to “Department of Plant Physiology” falling under the Basic Science Faculty.
Department of Plant Physiology is one the key disciplines of Plant Sciences and
is actively engaged in education, research and extension activities. Apart from
contribution in studies of physiological aspects of crops viz. cereals, oil seed
and pulses the department is also involved in conservation, multiplication, development
of agrotechniques, processing and value addition of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.
Research programmes on morpho-physiological characterization, chemical profiling,
post harvest processing and value addition of herbal plants has been undertaken
along with human resource and skill development through training in both on campus
and off campus to public and private sector personals, farmers, students, traders
and other stakeholders.
